Youth board-bow Deluxe.

Bolivian Rosewood back & riser...

Belly and tips of Purpleheart...[tips not yet complete]

I basically used the plans that Elkninja (from Trad Gang) originally posted for the youth bow and spent about $30 at Rockler on some nice wood. Main bow is a 1/8" x 1-1/2" x 48" piece of each Purlpeheart and Bolivian Rosewood glued together. 1/4" stuff used for the tips and to build the riser section.

I know nothing about building bows...these are the only ones that I've ever built. I was a little nervous but I finally got her to brace tonight...

Now, a question for the experts...how do I finish this type of wood? I want a nice clean look that I don't get with spray/brushed Poly on the Red Oak bows.

Results from the initial test drive...

At first, it seemed a little heavy...arrow falling off shelf, pulling below her chin, bow arm going up a little...

But with the help of the split-four-finger technique (2-over/2-under), she got used to it pretty quick and hit the corner of the mouth anchor.

She misses a lot more than she hits...but when she hits it, she makes pretty pictures!

Joey I think lacquer might be the thing. You might put sand&sealer on it first and then a lacquer finish.

I think you should be able to get by with spar urethane. I lopped off a limb of a tree the other day and coated it with spar urethane and it sealed it right up. It was a mesquite tree and I wanted to see how it'd work. Worked great. You might try contacting Mike Westvang and getting his opinion. I think some of the exotics are oilier than others and aren't compatible with certain sealers/finishes...

Thanks guys...it's by far my prettiest bow...yet! Jadyn said,"my bow is prettier than your bow, Daddy."

I detailed the tips and grip area tonight and added some leopard seal skin to the shelf.

Best shooter by far too! It really has a solid feel and thumps.

...oh...and yes, we're keeping the kid too! :lol:

Ronny, I want a thin finish that will really let the wood do the talkin'...will a Laquer do that? I always think of thick coats of laquer???

I was leaning toward several coats of Tung Oil but someone on TG also told me to try watered down Superglue? That's the second time that I've read that recently...wonder how it'd look?

With spray on spar urethane, apply a coat then sand with steel wool. Use the satin or semi-gloss finish. Four coats should do it. Sand with 0000 steel wool.

Have you tried tru oil?
