Default BODARK/OSAGE/HORSE APPLE

Hey, any of you over in east Texas use any of that yeller trashwood for bows? I mean, I know they make great fence posts and all, but, I'm talking self made bows from one piece of wood.

I want to get some; preferrably about 6.5' in length and about 10" in diameter. I know it's hard to find a log that's straight for that length, but I know they're out there. I've seen them. Anyway, they don't grow over here and I'm considering a trip over toward the Paris/Clarksville area to load up. I just have to find a good day to do it and someone gullible enough to watch my kids.

So, are any of you east Texans selfbowyers? OR maybe you just own a small farm that's infested with that "worthless" trashwood?

Tracy, you may want to get with Wingnut or Rusty on the tradgang website. I think they just got through cutting some this past weekend. You might also contact JD Jones from OK. Since he makes selfbows he might have some he could part with. Hope this helps.

Hey you two. I finally got some arrows (2117s) that fly pretty good out of my 55# Howatt Custom Bushmaster Longbow. I know that's not as fancy as those sticks you two shoot but I'm CALLING YOU OUT anyway. Five shots at ranges up to 25 yards. Winner gets the soda pop (no diet cokes allowed).

After that I'll switch to my recurve to collect that hog trophy that's still out there.

Tomme, ya ain't got a chance. I came in 249th place at the longbow tourney.

2117s are good arrows, considering they're fake. Quieter than those "other" arrows. But, still, wood is the best. Wood and longbows are just meant for each other. What's the poundage on that bow? Also, did you know that a longbow is no less accurate than a recurve. It's all in the MIND.

When're we gonna do this? July holds a fair sized TBoT shoot over here in San Angelo. Called the Midsummer Meltdown. Awesome shoot.

Steve, Rusty's invited me to cut with him when I get the chance. I've thought about it several times. Problem is, I've got to find some place to dump the young'ns off. I'll make it over there someday. Sounds like he has a lot of fun with it.

I'm there Tomme. Name the time and place! When we get this hunt/3D shoot going we'll have to settle this. Then we can break out the sodas.

Good I'm thirsty. Tracy the bow is 55#. I'm only using aluminum with it because I think you and Linedawg need me to handicap myself. Being the fairminded sporting individual I am, I'm willing to do that for you.

I don't need no stinkin handicap. I ain't skeered. I'll lug along some woods for you to try while I'm at it.

55# is a good bow weight for 2117s. Some folks tend to go with the 2018s though.

I love the smell of busted cedar in the morning.

We really need a fun trad shoot off at the next hunt. You know just set some targets out at different ranges at that big field near the barn and sling say three arrow at each (after we've decided on our own esoteric scoring sytem). Now this isn't to cast stones or aspersions on the compound shooters just a friendly contest so I can lay in a goodly soft drink supply. I do want to set up in the field just in case Bryan Keeling shows up and tries his trick of remotely guiding my arrows into a tree.

I was thinking of setting it up along a creek bank. That way you wouldn't have to go as far to fetch your arrows.

Now Bryan wouldn't do that, would he?! You gotta watch them Keelings, they're sneaky folk.

losthawg, I am going to east texas next weekend to move my feeder and stand. Seems that the lumber companies are coming in to clear some trash and big pines....we have some 75 feet tall....and straight,,,,,now I do not have access to any trash wood but we do have a large amount of hickory and intend to bring some back , can probably set one aside for you.....

Talk to you soon
Bob

slayer, sorry, got busy and wasn't able to PM you.

Anyway, I had to go to Arkansas unexpectedly and was able to cut down a hickory. Didn't have time to go find a bodark. Anyway, I'll be looking for some bodark at a later time. Right now, I'm prepping this hickory for drying and making staves. Been raining and I need another wedge. Slayer if you want a stave off this you're welcome, you just got to come to San Angelo and help me bust it.

I'm ready for some ACTION. Tomme, if'n yer want'n a shoot-off, ya got one. Just to make it fair, I'll even bring my leftie selfbow and shoot agin ya with that usin overspined arrers. I'd have to shoot normal to have a chance agin Steve though. And look out ifn Chunky and Biggen want in on the action.

Slayer, if you're going to be in for the weekend of 10/11, TBoT is having the Midsummer Meltdown at our range. Biggest shoot in San Angelo (including IBOs). It's fun, it's hot, it's dry, it'll wear ya clean out, and did I say it was fun? Well, brang yer recurve boy and water up. I'll show ya how we do it in West Tejas.
