This was posted on TBH. Give it a look. Send an email to TTHA.

Tomme, haven't we had problems with these people in the past?

Good call Bob. I was thinking the same thing. Probably should've mentioned that right off.

I can't belive what I just looked at. This is what I talk about all the time with people. We as hunters are our own worst enemys. I am not and you may not be but there are so many out there it stinks. This will give the anti's just a little more to fire at us with. I can't belive that TTHA would put something like this in print. I am not a member any more but have been in the past, and that in my opinion just put the knife in there back. I would not join them at this point for anything!!!!! I furthermore would ask all TTHA members that care about Archery and Archery hunting to email or call Jerry Johnston and raise hell with him about this....

I was told that he had sold TTHA to another group of people but that he was still in control of it. Don';t know how true this is but either way all bowhunters need to cram this right back down there throat !!!!!

I've already emailed Beleg with some of this.

I agree that we need to see the cartoon and the context before we reply.

If, however, it is as stated then we need to send a strong reply.

The onus for this type of action is not only on the cartoon drawer, but also the editorial staff who would accept such a cartoon.

The cartoon is not justifiable, unless one bases it on some very poorly done studies from 20 or so years ago which said that bowhunters had wounding losses of around 50%. Those studies have been highly criticized and were shown to be invalid. Unfortunately some still believe them. The Camp Ripley study which was reported in Deer and Deer Hunting Magazine amongst other places showed a wounding loss rate for bowhunting which is comparable to that of rifle hunters.

Unfortunately I feel that there is a segment of the rifle hunting community which has always been jealous of the fact that bowhunters get to hunt first. I don't necessarily feel that this is a large part of the group, but I do feel that it exists. What is really offensive to me is that a magazine which supposedly serves all hunters would play into this bias.

LostHawg, Jerry Johnston when he was head of TTHA once suggested that rifle season be moved back to Oct 1. Needless to say he caught some flak from the archers over this. He did apologize and say that he didn't even think of the special archery season when he made the proposal, but this gives yous ome idea of his personal biases.

Please note, I am not trying to start a war with rifle hunters, nor with TTHA. I agree with Birddog that such only hurts hunting's future in general. On the other hand, I do think that bowhunters have to stand up when we are being slandered.

I would believe the sucess rate of archers is higher than ever with the explosion of inovation and technology (compound bows) the last 10 years. Todays bows are more accurate, quieter and faster than ever before.

This is really sad.
To tell the truth, if it is to be, I have seen many more people wound deer and other animals with a rifle. Those who made this are probably high rolling ranch owners who have nothing better to do than spit on us "true" hunters.
However, you cannot count out the fact that some first time bowhunter probably went to a big time Texas ranch and shot and wounded one of the prized possesions.
All that is known is that it has been printed and it -will- hurt bowhunters state and nation-wide

Bob do you have a copy of the letter you sent..have we heard anything back from them? I called down there & got to talk to Jerry Johnston..he answered the phone with "ok let the butt chewing begin" I told him no butt chewing..I was disappointed & seen it as a slap in the face but was pleased that they threw an apology up on their web site..he said he was sorry @ least 5 times & said it was "handled"..just wondering what you have heard..or us as a group
