Default Directions/Tips for Grunts and Gobbles

There are so many folks that have been to a bunch of these that I almost forget to put in directions for the first timers. Note I almost said rookies, but I decided to be more politically correct. You rook... uh, er first timers need to be careful though. If someone asks you out for a late night hunt, hands you a bag and says stand at a crossroad and holler, "HERE PIG, HERE PIG!" I'd say don't do it.

You do need to get to the hunt though so here's my best directions.

1. Take Hwy 90 west out of San Antonio.
2. Go to Sabinal.
3. Turn left at the first (and only) traffic light in Sabina. You will be going South.
4. Proceed about 4.5 miles south until you reach the first big dip in the road. You'll be passing over a creek (whose name I can never remember). The dip is pretty obvious.
5. About 80 yards past the dip there will be a gate on the left and an LSBA poster. Proceed through the gate and follow the road to check in.

Note we are not allowed in the pasture to hunt until 12 noon and we draw for stands so there is no real advantage to getting there too early.

For the first timers, there are bunkhouses complete with kitchens, bar-b-q grills, bathrooms etc. You need to bring a sleeping bag, pillow, towels, food (if you're going to cook) and your usual hunting gear.

Tripods and pop ups work well on this ranch in many areas and in a few areas you might be able to use a chain on stand. They run a feed route in the evenings, but you probably need at least some corn.

Roads are pretty good unless we get a heavy rain (which has happened on three of the five hunts so far).

That's about it. Anyone else feel free to chime in with suggestions of their own.

Snakes? Really?

As big as they are, I thought they were poisonous alien creatures from the twilight zone.

Yeah, snake boots are not a bad idea. Rubber boots work pretty good too, and you need rubber boots for scent control. A hogs best defense is his nose and if there are a bunch of people milling around in front of a stand site on the road the hogs will bypass that spot.

So, for us first-timers, we just show up around noon with bow & arrows and blind/stand, and checkbook.

Does Brushy Hills Racnch house and feed us? Or. do we bring supplies?
Do I need a bedroll?

OK, I read the whole first post.

I'll bring my snake, and extras for them as don't have one.
