Ft Hood / Lake Whitney

Been hunting these areas for 2 years now. Lots of hrs put in scouting/hunting L. Whitney. Looking to network with others this fall on deer activity/chasing. I missed the rut last year. Bucks I saw were never ginn'd up. Could use some bowhunting advise on Ft Hoot. I scouted areas 22/23 and have some good spots but would like info on Archery Only areas. Size, food sources pressure.

Anybody out there who hunts these locations?

I haven't hunted either, so am no help there. I think Tomme has hunted Ft. Hood and will probably chime in when he sees this.

By the way, did you notice how quickly the public land section went up based on your suggestion? Now that is service. With a smile(y) even.   Thanks Buff for getting it running yesterday.

I hunt Hood every year. This year will be a little rough with a lot of the roads under water and all.

Tomme 08-23-2007 11:30 PM

Grizz I hunted Ft Hood for years. The price is right, just some hassles and hoops to jump through as you know. I may go hunt up there again this year as I no longer have a lease.

My best advise is to hunt wherever you want early, but scout out a couple of bow only areas, as these have been productive for me in November and December. I have probably hunted the areas near BLORA on the East side and the Q area on the West side the most, though I've heard that N FT Hood has the greatest concentration of deer.

I was in a bass tournament at belton this past april, first time on the lake by far the most beautiful lake I've ever been on even more so than whitney. Its a shame the corp of engineer doesn't allow deer hunting at the lake, so much prime habitat, but fort hood is right there on the west bank so you can hunt pretty close to the lake, just not right on it.

Anybody got the web link for Ft. Hood Outdoor Rec Center ???

Tomme 09-07-2007 12:02 AM

I don't have a web link, but I did find a copy of their hunting and fishing guide from 2005. Their phone number is 254-532-4552. Hope that helps.

No problem Hillbilly.I got a little insider info today for some good areas for deer hogs and sssshhhhhh.................axis.

Tomme 09-17-2007 07:42 PM

Axis, on Ft Hood? Thought they'd been wiped out. C'mon, you've got to share this one.

BUFF 09-20-2007 07:18 AM

?????????? Axis??????????

DJM 09-23-2007 04:52 PM

The info came from animal control. They have several areas where they trap hogs.He said there are axis. The hunting permit lists Axis and Blackbuck in addition to the Whitetail.I'll be there to see for myself!

DJM they stocked Blackbuck back in the 1970's, but there was a lot of hunting pressure and poaching. I hunted Ft Hood for 30 years and never saw one, so on those I'd b surprised if there were any left. Now Axis they used to have a pretty good population along Coryell Creek on the East side of the reservation and for those you might have a chance. Lots of Whitetails either way.
