Thumbs up Wildlife Refuges Increase Hunting/Fishing Opportunities

Wildlife Refuges Increase Hunting/Fishing Opportunities
9/23/10

The National Wildlife Refuge System (NWRS) continues to increase hunting and fishing opportunities for sportsmen across the country. The newest openings are the latest in a long line as the result of major legislation backed by the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance over a decade ago.

In 1997, the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance led the charge to pass the National Wildlife Refuge System Improvement Act. That legislation guaranteed that hunting, fishing and other wildlife oriented activities are considered priority uses on refuge units. This protected those uses in the face of challenges by anti-hunters, radical environmentalists, and others who are opposed to conservation practices. It also dramatically enhanced the hunting opportunities that had previously been available within the 100 million plus acres of land that fall within the NWRS.

On September 15, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) announced hunting and fishing opportunities would be expanded on eight different refuges. The new openings include additional land available to hunt in refuges where hunting is already allowed, adding additional species that can be harvested and opening an additional refuge to hunting for the first time.

The refuges with the increased opportunities include:

Modoc in California - additional land opened for migratory bird hunting
Cape May in New Jersey - adding upland game and turkey hunting
Fort Niobrara in Nebraska - opening land to big game hunting
Caddo Lake in Texas - opening for the first time hunting and offering big game opportunities
Deep Fork in Oklahoma - additional land opened for big game hunting
Bosque del Apache in New Mexico - adding turkey to list of game animals that can be hunted
Rappahannock River Valley in Virginia - opening land for fishing where previously not allowed
Minnesota Valley in Minnesota - adding land and species for migratory bird and upland game hunting and additional land for big game hunting

Throughout the NWRS, excellent opportunities exist for sportsmen to pursue waterfowl, big game and much more. Hunting is a popular public activity on refuge land and a practical means of maintaining wildlife populations. This has led the FWS to manage land to produce and maintain wildlife populations that will support the sport.

In recent years, the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance Foundation’s litigation arm, the U.S. Sportsmen’s Legal Defense Fund has been leading the way to protect this usage of the NWRS in the face of a huge 2003 lawsuit brought by the Fund for Animals, which later merged with the Humane Society of the United States, to stop hunting on certain refuges. The suit initially called for an end to hunting on 39 National Wildlife Refuges that had been opened since the 1997 passage of National Wildlife Refuge System Improvement Act. That suit has been expanded to include approximately 70 refuges.

This case continues to wind its way through the legal system.

The Caddo Lake expansion will be quite thrilling with added access for bowhunting alligator!! It's quite a rush if you've never participated in a hunt such as this!
