Grunts and Gobbles - Directions and General Info
OK we're getting close to the hunt and I suppose before some of the first timers head out, they'd like an idea of where to go and what to expect once they get there, so here goes.
The hunt will be at Brushy Hill which is about 5 miles south of Sabinal, TX. Directions are actually pretty simple. First go to Sabinal. Most of us will probably go through San Antonio and then head west on Hwy 90. You'll go through Castroville (watch out for the unmarked police car) and Hondo as the main towns. Sabinal is about 65 miles west of San Antonio.
If you're coming from San Antonio take a left (South) at the first and only traffic light in Sabinal. Go approximately 4.5 miles and the road will take a deep dip and cross a creek (first dip in the road). Just past the creek you will see a gate and a large barn on your left. There will also be an LSBA banner at the gate. Come through the gate and proceed to the check in point which will be either at the barn or 200 yards further up the road at the Will Rheem bunkhouse.
For those who have not been on the hunt. You need sleeping bag, pillow, food, beverages and cooking utensils. Each bunkhouse has a refrigerator, microwave, stove, bar-b-q pit, and at least one bathroom with shower. If you don't want to cook there are places to eat in Sabinal and D'Hanis.
I'd also recommend bringing a bag of corn. We can hunt feeders and they run an evening corn route, but you may want to feed in your area so bring a little corn. We will draw for feeders/feeder areas, but this ranch is about 13,000 and you may find an area off somewhere all to yourself. I like short (7-9 ft) tripods for hogs. Pop ups also work and are probably the best way to go for turkey. There are some areas where chain on tree stands work, but since we draw for area, whether you are in one of these areas is up to the luck of the draw.
Roads are good on the ranch unless there is a heavy rain, so while 4WD is always nice, it's not usually needed. NO ATVs or mechanical broadheads.
You might bring a little spare cash as we will probably raffle off a few items on Sunday. So far we have a new 10 ft tripod, carbon arrows, two collector knives, a deer print, a largmouth bass print.....etc.
If you shoot traditional you can chip in $5 and try to win the concrete pig. You have to sign it, so if you lose, the winner will get to show everybody that they're a better hunter than you :P We will also hae the shoot the balloon contest on Saturday.
That's about it. We will ONLY HUNT HOGS Friday night, then it will be hogs and turkey throughout the rest of the hunt. You are allowed to hunt hogs at night.
Any questions please post back.

Tracy, probably not. That was a one time good deal on the first hunt. We don't pay him to do this. Now knowing the kind of guy Pete is, if a picker or two in the bunch invited him down to share a beverage a fire and some music, then who knows.
I've just started learning to play guitar myself. Not in any of you guys league, but enjoy doing it. Coruse I also like going out and hunting hogs under the moonlight too.
So much fun, so little time.

Well, just curious, I'm probably gonna be pretty busy trying to procur a concrete piggy, myownself. Should be a piece of cake since Buff can't make it.
Sure was hoping to get another hunt in with him this spring.

Has anybody dropped off of this are there any last minute openings. I have been so bowed up on the golf course with the grass growing that I am missing everything, but I do have this weekend off.

Sounds more like you just had a hearty meal rather than a hunt by the title of that song.
Well, we're coming down to it. I've got all my gear rounded up awaiting the packing and hauling. Only thing left is sharpening broadheads and getting there...
Brad, you think the thought of me with a guitar is skeery, wait till I let go with the crooning.
