Default amatuer ornathologist

just wondering how many people have become amatuer ornathologists due to all the time spent in a tree stand. i never really cared about birds unless it was a duck, pheasant, dove ect... until i started sitting in a tree stand. with the hours spent sitting without a psp or game boy you see alot of birds.

I learned something I thought was pretty cool the other day. I had been watching a woodpecker come in and pick up corn throughout the morning. He really didn't look big enough to swallow a whole kernal of corn so I watched him fly over to an old mesquite tree by my tripod. He would drop the corn at the same place on a part of the tree truck that make a sharp turn toward the ground. The corn would get caught in the bark and he would then peck it and break up the kernal. He did this numerous times throughout the day and went to the same place on the mesquite. I think this was one smart bird.

I won't become that, but I see alot more birds than animals, so anytime I see one I do not know about, I have to go back to the cabin and look what it is. This weekend I saw a real dark (almost black) cardinal looking bird. I forgot to look what it was.

It is a Pyrrhuloxia. I saw them too and looked it up.

We sure see lots of different types of birds at the lease. I enjoy watching most of them. Tree ducks at my feeder, not so much!
