For instance you can rate threads, subscribe to them, change the way you view the thread, etc.

The options are at the top of the page just above the first post on each page.

I read bob's message about smiles. When I go advanced I do not have smiles. Do I have them turned off somewhere?

They should be right below your message space. Check your profile to make sure you don't have smilies turned off.
