Default Second Chance Buck

Four days earlier I thought I missed this buck on video at 21yds. Since then, I spent over 30hrs in the same blind waiting for the buck to check his scrapes again.

On Thursday afternoon, I decided to rattle about 4:45 when the wind calmed down. Soon after a young buck came trotting in and looked around. While watching the 4pt'er, I noticed movement about 70yds in front of the blind. I caught a doe, a young 8, and a good 10+ pt passing by on a trail. The doe circled back around and came in to check me out. She stomped her feet and stared me down, but never spooked. When she jerked her head to my right, I noticed the young 8 was back, with the buck I missed right behind him.

I set the camera, and grabbed for my bow. The buck was slowly approaching, so I waited for him to get in the window. When he did, I drew and he stared me down with his shoulder protecting his vitals. I was sure he was about to bolt, when the young 8 got his attention away from me. I aimed low, touched the trigger, and the arrow hit just behind the shoulder about 2" high, even though he tried to do his matrix style duck moves again. The arrow passed thru and landed just behind him. He went about 50yds to where he fell. The bloodtrail was suprisingly weak, but there was a thumb sized hole thru the top of his heart. He weighed 245 live/195 dressed, his teeth indicated he was 6.5, and he gross scored just over 150. I also noticed a large 4" cut on the very top part of his back from where I nicked him on Monday!

I wish I could have had a cameraman this hunt so the buck wouldn't have walked out of the frame, but that's the pains of self-filmed bowhunts. I'll do better next time!
