Default Fort Hood public land 2006, hows the hunting?

I've see threads on type two land, national forest/grasslands etc., but never one on the unique public land around fort hood. Just wandering how everyone is doing out there this year.

Boss I hunted Ft Hood for 30 years off and on. By that I mean there were some years I had a private lease, but other than that it was always my public land backup.

I can't give you a report this year as I've retired and moved out of the area, but in my view it's always been one of the best deals going.

Frankly I think the bowhunting in the bowhunting areas there is hottest from mid November through mid December. I've taken some of my best bucks during that time frame.

Good luck.

C'mon Gregg I know you've been hunting out there. What's this year's report?

While you're waiting for Greg to get on here, let me see if I can give you at least a partial explanation of the Teletrac system.

Basically it's a system for signing in (and out) by telephone. If you're in the area, you can still do the sign outs by physicall going by Hunt Control at the Rod and Gun Club. But to me this is a lot easier.

Basically you can call from Waco the day before you want to go hunting and sign up for a hunting area on the phone. You do this by calling the Teletrac # and then following the prompts to punch in the number for the area you want. You can also do this for signing out.

Sometimes the system goes haywire and you have to call the Rod and Gun club, but on the whole the system works rather well and allows you to have a reservation in your hunting area. The only other drawback is that you can only make a reservation for one day at a time, but usually that is not a handicap if you are hunting in the Archery only areas during gun season.

Hope that helps.

I just emailed Greg. He asked me to let you know that he's in Kentucky and will email you when he returns.

I'll try to find it. My computer crashed right after the season and I lost a lot. If I can locate it I'll send it to my Houston photo editor (Fitzgerald) and see if he can put it up.
