Just my opinion, but wait to get some wood arrows until he gets more figured out. The arrows break easily. I've put my carbons through heck and they normally come out OK. There was a time when wood was cheaper, but now days...not so much. I've never shot a compound, been shooting trad for about 40 yrs.

My practice arrows are my hunting arrows.

OBTW - I was on threerivers the other day and they had some wood arrows on clearance. I don't remember the spline...might check there.
