Rancho Creek Update (Shhhh)

Just got a call from Tomme and he wanted me to post this:

"You know it sure is nice, that on the last morning of the hunt, while all your buddies are sitting in stand on a cold morning shivering, that I had the luxury of staying in camp skinning a big ol__________" END QUOTE.

I started haranguing him to give me the details and threatened to drive out there to get the low down, but the ol cuss hung up on me!! Grrrr. Guess we'll all have to wait until tonight or tomorrow to get, as Paul Harvey said, 'the rest of the story'.

Congrats brother and can't wait for the play by play on the critter!!

I'm tempted to make Tracy and Ronnie wait to hear this story but here goes.

Fourth day of the hunt. Jay Fulton and I had seen a lot of pigs and turkey, but not the buck we wanted. One batch of pigs that came by had 23 in it and there was another group even bigger, but I really wasn't hunting pigs on this trip! One morning I had even stalked up to where a large group was bedded down. Saw three big boars with cutter tusks prowling around at 20 to 25 yards from me and, OH YES, that reminded me that I was hunting deer on this trip.

The fourth morning of our five day hunt dawned cold and misty. The bucks were beginning to chase the doe so when a doe was feeding on my corn at 8 I thought BAIT. Unfortunately four pigs came in and chased her off at 8:30.

It being a real cool day with a north breeze I decided to get back on the tripod at 12:30 and hunt till three. At 1:20 I saw a doe trotting through the woods to my left so I sneaked a peak over my shoulder to see if she had a boy friend. Sure enough there he was staring after her. I knew he wasn't going to stick around long so I drew as he stepped into the clearing at about 27 yards. Since this wasn't my cleared shooting lane there were twigs in the way at about 12 yards. While I debated if my arrow would clear he took two more steps out and twang. Kind of worried as he ran off with the arrow sticking out, but that was because it was a perfect quartering away shot. I did hit the paunch but I also got the liver and a lung. I was lucky with the shot and with the track as there was no blood trail, but he only went about 80 yards. I'll take luck any day

Bill Adams scored him gross as 126 and aged him at 6.5. He'll probably only net 110-115, but still a good buck in my book any day.
