My New Arrow Project
 

I've been playing around the last few months with building some truely traditional arrow. It has taken some time and a lot of cheap dowel rods to perfect my nocks, but I think I'm there. I finished my first three last night and I'm very proud of them. No glue (except for the points), no plastic and the fletching is wrapped with sinew. I had planned on using these for practice and hunting, but now I'm not sure I want to shoot them they are so pretty. What do you guys and gals think?

Well I couldn't stand it and took the first nine out to the range this morning. I believe these are the best flying arrows I've ever built and I've been building my own for over 20 years. Now to select the right broadheads for them, I'm thinking either Woodsmans or Snuffers.

Try a STOS broadhead on one. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Woodsmans and Snuffers are reportedly excellent heads though. I haven't tried them personally. I want a scary sharp edge on my heads and I just don't think I could to that with one of those.

Hawg, I checked out the STOS heads and I'm not sure aobut trying them. I'm a three blade man, lost a couple of deer years ago with 2 blade heads.

Bob, I wouldn't say I have a lot of free time. It taken me a long time to build these, been working on them for about 3 weeks and hour or two here and there.

I've had good results with 2 blades.

It might not have been the 2-blade heads fault it might have been all mine, but you know we have to blame something....;)

I've been using Woodsmans for years on my cedar shafts and Snuffers on my carbons when I use my compound. Both have proven themselves over and over, big holes and great blood trials. Don't want to switch what isn't broken if you know what I mean. I do want to try the Snuffer glue-on heads. I think the Snuffers are made a little better than the Woodsmans and hold up better though the Woodsmans have never failed me. They sometimes can't be reused after a kill.

BTW I finished the last three of the first dozen arrows. I've got something really special planned for the next dozen as far as the fletching goes. I'll post up some pics when I get a few done, but it will be a month or so.

I blamed compounds for a couple years on a couple bad hits I made. I've since learned something about archery and realized I was just being a knot head... :D

No, we go with what we can make work. I've become capable and confident with a longbow and 2 blade broadheads. No sense in me changing what works. I know a few folks that prefer 3 blade. It works for them, that's good enough for me.

I want to learn to tie the feathers on one of these days. Until then, I'll stick with Duco as long as I can find it.

That's the cool thing about all this, you keep trying until you find something that works for you. It don't have to work for anyone but you. Sure we all share what is working for us and hey it might help someone starting out or be a good path for someone looking for a change. I know I've changed some over the years, but most the time it is because a company goes out of business or stops carrying a product I like. Either way it is all good as long as we get out in the woods and enjoy the sport.

When you get ready to start wrap fletching, I suggest going on ebay and buying some cheap feathers. A lot of times you can get a Lot with a bunch of feathers and it don't hurt your wallet too much. Get yourself some good sharp craft knives you will need them. Then practice, practice, practice till you are happy. You can use any small thread or even braid fishing line to practice, but I recommend using the synthetic sinew when doing the real thing. It holds better and is easier to work with.
