Wid-doe on the BAO...

Ever read a more cheesy thread title??? http://discussions.texasbowhunter.co...lies/smile.gif
It seemed like it had been years since I'd been deer hunting...in reality it had had been over 2 years since I took the Hill Country buck with my Bob Lee in October of 2005. After breaking my elbow during the summer of 2006, I missed all of the 2006-2007 season trying to rehab the elbow and build back up to draw weight. Now there have been rabbit hunts and even a hog hunt or two...but this was my first deer hunt in 2 years so when I hit the stand Friday morning after Thanksgiving...I didn't plan on being too picky about making meat. This little doe came in early and alone and became my first harvest with my Marty Thomas Signature Series Black Widow SA-III, 12-yard shot, 0-yards to recovery. It may be small, but it makes me happy... Attachment 358 I spent the rest of the weekend hunting my favorite spot on the place. This stand is great for trad-bows...especially in the rain. Attachment 359 Attachment 360 The view... Attachment 361 On three different hunts I had this young 8-point at less than 10-yards and let him walk...I could have touched him with an arrow at one point. But rules are rules and this is exactly the kind of deer that BAO is trying to protect with their management plan...he'll be much better in a year (or two...or three). Notice in the video that he's missing his right ear so I've nicknamed him "Van Gough". I have over an hour of footage of this deer and another young 8-point taken over three hunts but the big boys never showed up. I also caught a coyote cruising by on a trail 30-yards behind them. I couldn't make out what the animal was through the netting in low light, I just hoped it was caught by the camera as it passed. While reviewing the footage with others in camp we thought that it may have been a mountain lion that some hunters have reported hearing...but upon further review, it's just a 'yote. Still would have liked to have gotten an arrow into that critter as he looks pretty healthy...wonder if he knows what happened to Van Gough's ear? Click on the "Big Cat at BAO" link to watch the video. BAO Videos It was a great trip. Great to hunt with John, Ben and Team-Ferguson (BHNA)...always good to be hunting BAO. Book me for Thanksgiving next year and the rest of you leave Van Gough alone until then! http://discussions.texasbowhunter.co...lies/smile.gif |
Good job Joey. Looks like a lot of deer are falling to arrows this year. Keep at it, I'm sure you'll get a biggen come cruisin by eventually.

Congrats on the doe.

Attaboy on a great shot ... That bow has killed more wildlife than parvo.

Marty, I think it's broken? I tried just waving it at the deer but they didn't immediately fall over dead like you said they would???
I actually had to shoot an arrow at her. Thanks everyone, it was good to be in a tree Friday morning...and great to be in a blind the rest of the (cold & rainy) weekend. |
