Turkey hunting weekend

Hunter and myself made our annual spring break weekend down to the lease. We filled feeders and got ourselves ready for turkey season. So far it's been slow for me but Hunter had a gobbler strut by her a couple times this morning but no shot was taken. The gobbler had a mess of hens so Hunter couldn't convince him to come closer. So far the afternoon hasn't been any different. Nothing around me, but Hunter hears a few gobbles every now and then. We will be waiting patiently.

Well yesterday ended with no birds being harmed. I had 6 jakes come by so guess they will be safe for another year. We are back in the blinds again this morning listening to gobbles off in the distance hoping my call sounds pretty enough to bring a gobbler my way. When Hunter was getting ready to leave from the cabin she said she heard gobbling pretty close by the cabin so I guess I am in the wrong spot again. It's early still so we will see what happens.

Well, I wish I could report a bird down, but my normal happened again with the turkeys. Hunter texted me that 2 big birds just walked passed her without giving her a look and was in a hurry to get to me. 15 minutes later, they silently came in and I waited for the biggest bearded one to give me that shot you want. I have a love hate relationship with turkeys. I love to hunt them, but I hate shooting at them because it don't always work out for me. I settled my pin up the leg with the bird being at attention. I squeezed the release, and watched the arrow fly right under him. I could not believe I did it again. After trying to figure out what happened, I could feel a little pain on my knee. I wasn't paying attention and had my leg in the way and when I released, the cam hit my knee causing the arrow to go low. The birds jumped up, and just walked off with out a worry.
Well, even with no turkeys bagged, it still was a great weekend spending it with Hunter.

I know what you mean about the "love, hate" relationship. I absolutely love turkey hunting, but I always seem to screw it up when the chance presents itself. :(

Still must be nice to get out there! As of 5pm today, my work schedule is about to get way more manageable. Heading to Big Oak Bowhunting on Thursday.

I should add, I'm taking the next 9 days off, hope to get out for turkey at my place, but not sure yet.

Good luck!!!

Wish I had been able to make the Spring Break trip this year with Bobby and Hunter, but it did not work out for me. We will be back at it over the long Easter weekend. I am hoping to take my first trad turkey! I love to turkey hunt and have had really good luck with hunting them with my compound. I have not had a shot at a turkey yet with my recurve or longbow.

Can't wait to try out my new Baker Boys turkey call!!
