LSBA Beach Party
The EC voted to hold the first ever LSBA Beach Pary this Summer in Rockport, TX. It will be held the weekend of July 13-15th though you may want to stay longer.
Rockport has the only Blue Wave certified Beach in the state of Texas and it's a great place to sun, swim, catch mullet, etc. The water is also shallow and it's a great place to bring small children. I'll post more details in a few days, but I know that some of you are planning vacations so I thought I'd get the dates up. We are trying to keep it simple but we figure on fishing, bowfishing and a big fish fry even if we have to buy the fillets at H.E.B. If there's enough interest we might even have a Flounder bowfishing event Saturday night. I already know one business that rents homes and cotages on Copano Bay and they will give LSBA members a 10% discount. This should be a lot of fun and I guess we can count this as our summer hunt! |
Sounds great!

Beach Party? :?
Dude, don't tell me you're gonna be singing Beach Boy tunes. I get this vision of Ray Stevens and "Surfing USSR". |
My kids are ready. Now!! lol I've taken them to the coast, fishing, a couple of times. They sure did like it. I've allready talked to them about it. I think my daughter started packing!! lol

LMAO Tracy,

I love Ray Stevens, send me a tape. Now you don't want me singing real Beach Boy songs, I never could hit those high notes even with an operation and an Elephant standing on my toe!
We ought to catch some fish, shoot some mullet and maybe have a beer on the beach (did check and the only thing not allowed at the Park are glass containers). In addition to the beach, the pier and bay fishing there is an art museum, and a lot of shops in town. At the beach park there is also a kayak area, and a jet ski and water ski basin. Goose Island state park has the largest oak tree in the state of Texas and it's about 15 miles north of town, and for anyone who would like to check out the Aransas Wildlife refuge, its just up the road too. Just make sure you make it back for the fish fry. |
Tomme, are you talking about catching these types of mullet(s)

I know I ain't going now!!!!!!! :( I can see it now, Buff in his speedo and Tomme in his yeller wig singin, "Surfin USSR". Tomme on his guitar and the two of them begging me to break out my mandolin. What a site. Compatible, but painful. |
So you bringing the mandolin? Buff could probably pack it as there is extra room in his luggage formerly occupied by clothes. :D
|
|
Buff's nickname takes on a whole new disturbing meaning! YIKES.
|
you mean Big Ugly Fat Fellow???

Big Ugly Fat Fortress
The B 52 has been nicknamed the "Buff" since the 60's.

The beach party idea sounds great. I've been wanting to take my kayak and fish that area, the beach party would be a great time. Looking forward to more info.

Pick a spot that's great. There are some great Kayaking areas down here. One of them is right where the party is going to be and also where the Mullet Madness hunt will take place. If you've got some vacation time and want to stay over a couple of days there is a whole system of trails that Parks and Wildlife set up with GPS points on the way to Port Aransas. That's only about 16 miles from Rockport.

Beach Party
Tomme, Send me a few of the places to stay that you know about . Our plans to stay in the B&B in Rockport may not happen. She's got the place up for sale right now. Thanks, Steve

Injun how big or fancy do you want to go?
One way to check out places might be to go to the Rockport City site and try their hotel/motel link. Another place is this link http://www.copanovacationrentals.com/. I know the lady who does these and she was going to look into an LSBA discount. One of these might be real nice if you want to stay a couple of extra day especially if you have a big group and can split costs. Some of them are two and three bedroom and many are on the water with their own fishing piers. Another place that might be worth checking out is the Little Bay Club. Try www.littlebayclub.com/. This is a old motel that was recently completely remodeled with some really nifty, upgrades like a really great pool and a 500 ft fishing pier. It's right on the water (Little Bay) in Rockport and is just across little bay from the main event area for the LSBA shindig. I think it's fairly inexpensive with rates for a one bedroom cabin, with kitchenette, etc. being about $125. Those are my best thoughts so far. |
Sounds like fun!

Tomme,
how far is the Little Bay Club from the event? Vicki and I are putting this on the calender. are there any guide lines to go by? the unsaid rules and such. first timer here, so any pointers or help would be great. Thanks Steve and Vicki |
Wassaw the little Bay club is about 1 mile from the park where we're having the event.
Since this is a first time event, a lot of it's free floating. There is a lot to do and see in the Rockport Area and here's some ideas. Of course some of what we end up doing will depend on how many people come. 1. Friday evening we might have a casual picnic and sign in at the Park. This would be for those who had come down early Friday. For the folks who make it in early, I hope to hook up some people with boats with folks who want to go fishing Saturday morning. You can also fish at the park. We might have a casual fishing tournament, with a low entry fee ($1-5) if people are interested. 2. Saturday morning we will have people to sign you in at the Rockport Blue Wave beach. If they get the outdoor Pavillion built by then, we will be there, otherwise we will claim a set of picnic tables near the Beach Pavillion and restrooms. The beach is a good place for sunbathing, and is very kid friendly as it's shallow. It's also a great place to use a cast net to catch finger mullet for bait (which I think is a lot of fun too). This park also has kayaks and paddle boats to rent and there is a protected ski basin for those who might want to jet ski or water ski. There's also a fishing pier. There are also sand volleyball courts and a saltwater swimming pool. 3. Saturday afternoon, I'd like to bring a group out to my place on Salt Lake (about 4 miles from the park) to go bowfishing for mullet. Plan would be to have a little contest, but also give some folks a chance to get a mullet to enter into the Texas Bowhunting and Bowfishing Records book. Minimum for that is 1 lb and there are a lot of mullet in that lake bigger than that. I have a couple of skiffs and a boat we might be able to use or we could shoot them off of the pier. 4. It will be hot in the afternoon and for those who don't want to fight the heat, but would prefer some sightseeing (and AC), there are some nice shops in town as well as some art galleries and a art museum. My wife can always find something to buy in the shops. Close by (Say two miles from the park is the Fulton mansion). The Fulton mansion is a Parks and Wildlife historic structure and it's worth a tour if you're into fine old houses built in the 1800s. Further up the road is Goose Island State Park one of it's attractions is the "Big Tree" which is the biggest live oak in the state of Texas. Of course Aransas Wildlife Refuge is also in the area, but it's about 30 miles away, so I'd recommend it on some other day than Saturday. 5. Saturday night we will have a big fish fry on the beach (we'll either catch them or buy them at H.E.B., but either way we will have a fish fry). I hope to have blue crab as well. If I recall correctly the EC voted to make this free to members and family, either that or we will put out a donation can. Idea though is to get together for a big feed. We will sell souvenir t-shirts and I think we may do some raffles on Sat night. 6. Also on Saturday night there has been some discussion of going on a Flounder hunt. This might be gigging, or it might be with a bow. This one is still a little hazy, as I figure I'm going to be pooped by that time, so it will have to be either volunteers with boats or perhaps a group going together on a guide. I know of at least a couple of guys who say they are coming who are big on floundering down here. If that doesn't happen we can still chill on the beach after supper, and then go night fishing on the various piers. This is a first shot at a beach party and I'm open to suggestions. Emphasis is somewhat on a do your own thing with friends and fellow bowhunters rather than a lot of planned activities. We will get together Saturday night for the fish fry and perhaps to hand out a trophy or two. Time permitting, I would suggest people plan on an extra day or two. If you haven't been here before that would allow you to go to Aransas Wildlfe Refuge, which is worth a trip and also to take a ferry ride over to Port Aransas. |
thats a 2 week vacation worth!!!!! thanks for takeing the time to write all that. Vicki and I are shooting for Friday night and Saturday night. we both would like to try our hands at the Mullet bowfishing!! been giving Dena a hard time on the MOF website about MOBY MULLET. she's determined to top her 4+ pounder this year. I'll bring my fishing gear also, hard to be so close to water and NOT fish. Thanks again, Looking forward to this!!!!!! Steve |
