I just spent a great weekend with some great folks. The BHNA crew traveled to Newcastle this weekend where we met up with Phil Hennefent and Lindsay Cation, owners of Display It Hardwood Display Cases.
Phil and Lindsay drove from Oneida, IL to deliver a beautiful display coffee table to James and Donna and upon our encouragement, brought their bows to try their luck on some Texas hogs. This would be their first trip to Texas and their first time to hunt hogs.
As has been the case lately - the weather just didn't cooperate! A torrential rain on Friday night pretty much had the ranch flooded. Getting around was a muddy mess to say the least.
We awoke Saturday morning to another downpour canceling the morning hunt so we went back to bed and waited til later in the day to give Phil and Lindsay a tour of the ranch and scout for sign at the feeders.
We had to tred water almost seat deep on the Zuki to get to a couple of feeders only to find them standing in several inches of water when we got there. However, we were encouraged by fresh hog sign at a few other feeders and made our plans for the afternoon hunt.
For the afternoon hunt, Lindsay and I chose a stand near a known hog bedding area and James and Phil took up a stand about half mile away in some thick cover in the Brazos River bottom.
As soon as Lindsay and I climbed into the stand we were greeted by a swarm of mammoth size skeeters! We quickly fired up the ThermaCell units and were skeeter free in a matter of minutes.
We baked in the sweltering sunshine for a couple of hours until the sun settled behind the trees and then we were pretty comfortable for the rest of the evening. Unfortunately, once the weather cooperated - the hogs didn't! We saw one lone coon, a cottontail rabbit and a noisey armadillo but no hogs visited our feeder.
Phil and James had about the same luck at their stand and were visited only by an armadillo and a turkey hen. Maybe Sunday morning would bring the hogs back to the feeder.
Well, guess what? Sunday morning only brought heavy rains and lightening! We barely managed to get our gear out of the stands and back to camp before the floods began again!
When we left the ranch today, the Brazos was already getting out of its banks. Maybe the hogs will head for higher ground this afternoon and Phil and Lindsay will get another chance before they have to leave.
Phil and Lindsay build some absolutely awesome wooden display cases for game mounts or anything else you want to display I suppose. Take a minute to visit their website and check out their work.

Phil and Lindsay, we hope you'll come back again for another try at the hogs. In spite of what you witnessed this weekend, it really doesn't rain all the time in Texas.
