I have been an IBEP Master Instructor for several years and I'm a Life Member of LSBA. As the Chairman of the LSBA IBEP Committee I would like to make the following offer:

If there is enough interest I will conduct a IBEP Student/Instructor or if there are enough interested that have already taken the student course I will conduct an instructor only course. The student course is $15 and the instructor course is free. If we do a combined course I will donate $10 per new student to the LSBA.

I will travel a reasonable distance to conduct the course and it must be done over a weekend.

I strongly believe the members of LSBA should be the bowhunter instructors of this state. And as anyone can tell from the posts on other sites, We Need Instructors!!!

Who is interested?

Jack

Nice gesture, Jack! I might know someone who would be willing to assist you, if needed. :D

Currently Jack has courses scheduled in Friendswood on February 24 & 25 and at BPS in Katy on March 3 & 4. I took both my student and instructors courses from Jack and his classes are quite motivational. If Jack cannot motivate you in one of his classes, you don't need to be bowhunting!!!

...and where is the Fitzgerald guy! :D

Busted - Where is Kyle? Maybe I can find you a class closer to you.

Buff - Yes a student/instructor class is 16 hrs. long. Pearland is just south of Houston. I see where Beleg and his instructor group is planning to expand into east Texas. I know Mike Smith is a Master Instructor and could possibly do a class out that way. Or perhaps he will hold one in the DFW area and you and Tinman could attend.

Joey - Didn't Mike teach your student class? You need to encourage him (I know I will) to do an instructor course up there.

Chunky - As you can see from Dena's post I am doing combined student/instructor courses in Friendswood and Katy. I don't know how long it has been since you took the student course or where but it could be beneficial to see the new student format. Let me know if you would like to attend either one of those classes. There is no charge if you already have the student course.

As always H4H, thanks for the kind words now get ready for your next class:-)

Thanks for the interest guys and I'll do what I can to get you in to a class.

We've got 4 classes scheduled at Camp Bullis this year -- about 35 miles from Kyle. We can make one of those a combined 'Student/Instructor Course if anyone is interested. I, for one, would like to see more of LSBA's senior leadership become instructors.

Here are those dates for Bullis.

April 21, 22 (Sat and Sun)
May 19, 20 (Sat and Sun)
July 21, 22 (Sat and Sun)
Aug 18, 19 (Sat and Sun

Thanks Rick. There is also normally at least one combined class held at TPW headquarters in late July or early August and one or two at Bastrop State Park.

You're welcome Jack. You know Milbo and I will do whatever we can to promote IBEP.

I'm curious to know, outside of you and Bobster, how many of LSBA's EC members have been through the IBEP or certified as Instructors?

Hot4Huntin (Bobster's Wife) has been thru the class and is currently one of my teaching partners. Mike Baird (PR Committee Cairman) has and Tomme completed the instructor training several years ago but is not current. Beleg is an instructor in the Dallas group. We are making progress but I'd like to see a lot more involved.

Dena Kana, Membership Chairperson--IBEP Instructor and I will be assisting Jack this year.

These are some others:

I know that both Reg 76 Reps (Elvis & Steve) are also certified and Elvis is Instructor Certified. Not certain about any others.

The problem I keep running into is that there are more instructors than there is need/interest in taking the class. I think this is why there hasn't been an Instructors class here in the last couple of years.

I would be very interested in helping to spread Bowhunter Ed into the Northeast Texas Region as well. Maybe we can get Mike's group to hold an Instructor's class this year.

Joey welcome to the frustration we long time instructors have lived with. When I became the Stat IBEP Chairman the primary complaint I heard from TPW and bowhunters alike was "There aren't enough instructors or classes being held around the state." I used to drive from Houston to Dallas just to do student classes. Now we have more instructors but can't get the support from the bowhunters to take the student class. You have seen the threads, It's not mandatory so I'm not takin' it and won't support making it mandatory. I'll work on Mike and get him to hold an instructor course up there and get you certified. We need energetic instructors that will push the program.

Thanks

The Dallas area IBEP Instructor group is planning an IBEP Bowhunter Ed class for Martin Creek Lake State Park on February 24th and 25th. This will be a combined Student/Instructor class. Some of the employees of the Martin Creek Lake State Park and TPWD employees in the surrounding area are going to take the instructor course. Several of the instructors in the Dallas area are Master Instructors and will be helping out with this class. Bowhunter Ed is expanding into East Texas!

Several members of the Executive Council (EC) are IBEP Certified Bowhunter Ed instructors or have completed the class. We encourage all LSBA members to take the course. It's important that the membership know that the EC strongly supports Bowhunter Education.

I think it's a great gesture on Jack's part to donate $10 per student to the LSBA. We need all the students we can get so Jack has to write a big check! :D

Thanks Jack!

JJ, I would like to sign up and take both courses if Between you and H4H can keep me reminded. Also I'll get with you on some other questions as they come up. I'm just south of you in Alvin. I'll see if I can round up a few more also. (281)703-8257 Thanks, Steve

Dangit! That's the weekend of the Fudd Hunt in San Angelo...yes, I know that we're driving across the state to bowhunt rabbits...but I promised my nephew(5) he was goin'....so, he is goin'.

Is that the only scheduled combined class up here this year, Bob?

I admit that I've also had work schedule problems in the past that would have prevented me from being much help to a teaching group. I have more flexability at work now and could participate more on the weekends.

I am here in the conroe area, When I put a class together I had 5 people show up. I received several calls and when it came down to taking the class only five showed up and two of those were my wife and daughter. I guess some people do not care about bowhunter ed as long as they are not hunting the few areas which require it.

Tinman,
There is going to be a combined class in Brownwood on Feb, 3rd. If thats not to far for you to travel. I'm going to take it. Been meaning to for a couple of years now.

Injun,

I've got plenty of room in the class in Friendswood. That class will be a combined class on February 24 & 25. The cost for the student portion is $15 per person and the instructor portion is free. I supply all of the materials. All you would bring is you bow and field tipped arrows on Sunday. You will need to send me a check to reserve a spot in the class. PM me and I'll send you my mailing address and phone number. Let me know names, phone numbers and e-mails of all that would be attending.

While Bullis has made IBEP Certification Mandatory, we're not getting the volume of students we had in the past. To increase interest we started working with Sportsman's Warehouse, and our pro shop. Anyone who purchased a bow receives an IBEP brochure (Wadsworth pamphlet) and a copy of our course schedule. We started this last July and ended up with 20 students from the effort at Sportsman's Warehouse alone. We're going to try it again this year and will include the area NWTF fund raisers to see what else we can draw.

I think we might be able to get a plug or two in on an episode or two couple of a 'bowhunting' TV show -- not 100% certain yet, but relatively confident.

Rick, I know the feeling. The Houston area has never been real active but I've had to cancel at least one class for the last 2 years due to a lack of interest. Dena has started to include the IBEP pamphlet in all of the new/renewal LSBA membership packs and I believe the LSBA has agreed to give a $5 discount on membership to new graduates of the IBEP course. I'm teaching a class at the BassPro shop in Katy as a result of LSBA activities out there. We are generating more interest now if we can only get that to transform into students it will be great. It just seems that I'm traveling more again with the classes.

Travel, yipes! At least we're not having to travel to hold our classes.

We'd probably be in undated with students if TPW would make having a Certification mandatory to hunt the WMA's.

Have you had any luck with the Urban Bowhunting initiative? I'm going to try generating some interest with our town fathers this Spring. I think I'd have a 50% chance of getting it through. If luck is with me, one of the things I plan on recommending is that they model the program after the NBEF's Guide and only allow folks who've taken the Course participate.

I sure that would generate some interest here, especially with the size of the bucks that are walking the neighborhood. Saw one this fall that would have made B/C.

Give us a call the next time they send you TDY to SAT. We'll put some BUFF on the grill.

Pencil me in for March 3,4 at BPS in Katy. I loved the student class years ago when I took it in Porter, and have always wanted to take the instructor part. Would love to be more a part of the educational process.
