Need some Traditional Bow Advice

Ok. My son who is 16 likes his PSE but really wants a trad bow to hunt with. I have no clue about trad bows what so ever. I would think something in the 40# - 55# range for him. He is pulling 60# on his PSE right now and it is a 28" draw.

Here is the kicker... He is Left handed.

does anyone have an older recurve they would want to part with that would work for him. Or where can I go to get entry level here and not spend $900.00

My best advice for you would be go to 3Rivers Archery and get him a Samick Sage. It is a really good beginners Takedown Recurve for about $120 + Shipping. I would also recommend getting him one that is no more than 45# to start with.

Arrows are also something that will need to matched to the bow and he should start with a good set of carbons with feather fletching. Then let him sling them and see if he likes traditional archery. If he does then step him up to one of the custom bows out there.

Most archery shops can set you up with feather fletched arrows. If you let me know what weight bow and draw length I can recommend a shaft type, length and point weight.

I can build them for your son. I can do plain jane arrows to fully custom crested one of a kind arrows.

What bountyhunter said. Do not get a real heavy bow. Just because he is pulling lots of poundage on his PSE, it will not be the same for a recurve. Bob

The draw weight will be 45#. Is his draw length going to be the same as his compound?

That is a tough question as I've seen some folks that are and some that aren't. It depends on how he was measured and who did the measurements.

You have a great trad archery club in your area Denton Archery Club and Cowtown Archery Club. I would reach out to Gene or Todd Pool, They can point you in the right direction.

With all these trad questions and new bows being purchased sounds like we could have anice showing at TBOT's Vanderpool shoot in April and the Gleen Park May shoot in Chester. What to us tradpoles think?:chatterbox:

Jo has some great advice if you have some Trad shooters local they can help you a whole lot faster and better than I can sight unseen.

I tried to help rtread via emails early this year and he got frustrated and all but quit shooting. Last weekend we hooked up and I was immediately able to see his nock point was to low and causing some of his problems. First hand, in person help is aways best.

What I need to know is some more info about the arrows. He really wants wooden arrows.

Is there a big difference between wooden and carbon arrows?
Are the field point screw in like on carbon arrows or are the glued in on wooden arrows?
How many hunting arrows do most of you have as compared to practice arrows?

Just my opinion, but wait to get some wood arrows until he gets more figured out. The arrows break easily. I've put my carbons through heck and they normally come out OK. There was a time when wood was cheaper, but now days...not so much. I've never shot a compound, been shooting trad for about 40 yrs.

My practice arrows are my hunting arrows.

OBTW - I was on threerivers the other day and they had some wood arrows on clearance. I don't remember the spline...might check there.

On the wood arrows, I agree and would wait on purchasing those up front. The carbons are a lot more durable and forgiving. If you buy your bow from Bob, he can set your son up with arrows too.
