Well Linedawg and I made one last attempt to get our spring turkey.
We head up to the grasslands in Decatur to try our luck.
We setup near the edge of field and proceeded to call. About an hour we heard a faint gobble. We called and called, but nothing responded. We decided to move to another area.
We quickly setup and started calling. This time we heard nothing and we waited for another and decided to walk around and do some calling.
We circled around and walked through woods. We came back out near our blind and discovered my jake decoy was nocked over.
We noticed part of the jakes beard had been pulled out. Something attacked my jake, but we have no clue as to what did it. We rattled of scenarios and we decided the best 'Story' to tell everybody was that a cougar attacked it.
We got back into the blind and called again. I guess it was about an hour when I saw a turkey walking across the open field about fifty yards away.
We called, but the turkey never responded. We waited and waited and decided it was getting too hot to sit in the blind any more.
We packed up and left for lunch and AC.
After lunch we scouted out another spot that might have some potential.
After we got setup up we could hear the thunder rumbling around and the wind was starting to lift up the blind. We heard one gobble, so we stuck it out. The wind finally settled down and we thought it might work out.
Nope! The wind came back and picked the blind up over our heads and that was the end of 2004 Spring turkey season.
It was a great learning experience hunting Spring turkey and I look forward to next year.

The only thing that I'll add is that we KNOW it was a cougar. Just had to be a cougar. It was a horrible scene of foam shredded plastic scattered and decoy death and mayhem. I hope I never have to witness such massive decoy destruction by a cougar again.

Well, you had better luck than me. All I had this weekend was a lone hen fly into our camp at BSA camp. I, of course, quickly went to my truck and got my mouth call. I had that hen quite confused there for a bit, but she finally left. LOL Kinda skeered the womenfolk though.
I personally try to avoid cougars that attack foam turkeys. Very mixed up cats.

Attacked by a cougar.
Guys, you are lucky to be alive. I can't believe it pulled the blind over your heads and attacked you that way.
Good thing the decoy was there to distract it and give you a chance to run for your lives. And I guess you didn't get any pictures either. :(

This hunting story is gettin way out of hand.
The 'Cougar' attacked my decoys and not the blind. Steve broke wind and blew the blind over our heads. :o :o

I guarentee you that wind weren't broke! It was full bodied wind for sure!

I guess all that wind explains why these two hunters were not able to get a turkey at Brushy Hills either.
Now we know why the turkeys were keeping a big distance between themselves and the decoy and blind.
Warning to everyone. You are taking a big chance hunting with either two of these fine hunters. They seem to initiate big winds. :P

I think the two biggest turkeys were in the blind all day... ....now I still think someone's brush hog hit the decoy while the 'hunters' were sleeping...Great story, you two should do one for the magazine,,,,,,, [/i]

I don't know about doing one for the magazine. Do they have a comedy section? :D
hogslayer
05-11-2004, 08:40 PM
yeah we have a comedy section in the magazine, and you guys started it, hope robert can get this story in pring, we should increase readership, I still cannot believe you guys were stalking bigfoot in decatur
Linedawg
05-11-2004, 08:44 PM
Well, we thought it was bigfoot. But when the tracks led us back to the blind we realized it was just Timm!

Bigbutt and Bigfoot get confusing sometime  I can see how you made the error, but actually, I think your slightly larger than timm and I know my gutt has you both beat...I was not near the grasslands.....
Glad to see you guys had fun....

I think we'd better leave this road show in Decatur. Not sure if our members are ready for all the hot air coming out of Steve
Hey FL,
I don't remember you getting anything at Brushy Hills either. I did notice all the vegetation around your blinds was wilted and had a green haze around it.

Okay, let me see if I got this straight.
Since Timm was clouding up the blind too much, you both left the blind so Timm could go find a tree. While you were out a Mercury came driving along and ran over your decoy. So, Steve, trying to track the culprit found the tracks of a raccoon and ran to tell Timm about it. Timm then took to the trail and when he saw Steve's foot print was convinced Bigfoot was in the area. Meanwhile the noise coming from the mall was so loud you could hardly think.
Next time you should try hunting outside of Dallas!!!

I think that Timm and Steve fabricated this story, I think that the hunt was for wild turkey (wildturkey) and they killed a lot...then they imagined the decoy and bigfoot. Probably the wind was caused by the snoring as they slept off the kill......
JMHO...but since neither like wild turkey I am probably wrong...and since Timm does not drink an hunt this thought looses something....

OK, I have to set this straight and stop all the rumors.
Timm and I went to the grasslands to turkey hunt. And hunt we did. We found a honey hole that was chuck full of toms. Each one was sporting at least an 11" beard and 2" spurs. None weighed less than 25lbs. When we called it was like they had never heard a turkey call before. They all came running. 10 of them attacked our jake decoy and really gave it a thrashing. Finally Timm and I had seen enough and started shooting. Within 10 minutes we had both limited out. As we were walking back we decided to fabricate a story of failure to through everyone off the trail. It seemed to work but hogslayer was too smart for us. So, if anyone wants to know where the honey hole was I'll tell. Take 380 to Decatur, then head north on 730 about 9 miles, then........ What, did you really think I would tell! 8)

I THOUGHT I'd heard a lot of stories - sitting around a campfire. Holy Moly, who could MAKE UP such a yarn? I've seen it now in writing. I KNOW these two SUPERHUNTERS are MY heroes. About that "comedy" section in the magazine ...

Guys,
I promise Steve and I actually went hunting at the LBJ grasslands. :D
Ask the two ladies we met. They were both riding horses.
LostHawg
05-14-2004, 11:13 AM
What kind of horses? Names, phone numbers, were they bowhunters? Did you get them to join LSBA?
:?: :?: Enquiring minds :?: :?:

I will say this. We did meet two ladys and they were riding horses. But the rest is kind of like those directions to the honey hole!

Wow this area of the board did not see any action all spring.
Maybe Steve and I need to go turkey hunting again next spring.
I'm sure the cougars are still there in Decatur.

I guess 07 Spring season was slow as well. I got a nice longbeard, but I used my shotgun to get him. It was my first longbears with a shotgun.
Hey Steve if you are out there get in touch with me. You are still a Sticks N'Limbs pro staffer.
